Dr. Kathleen Berecek, Professor, received her B.S. degree from St. Xavier College in Chicago, Illinois.   She received both her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.   Dr. Berecek joined the UAB faculty as an Assistant Professor in 1981.

Research

We have two major areas of interest in my laboratory. First, we are interested in the role of the central nervous system in blood pressure regulation and the pathogenesis of hypertension. Briefly, we are exploring the role of angiotensin II and vasopressin and their interaction with the central nervous system in blood pressure control and the genesis of various forms of experimental hypertension.

We are also interested in the role of the renin-angiotensin system in cardiovascular remodeling. In this area, we use animal models of experimental hypertension to determine the roles of the renin-angiotensin system and the increase arterial blood pressure on cardiovascular hypertrophy and fibrosis.
